One Skirt, Three Looks: How to Wear Your Maxi Skirt

By now, many are familiar with the workings of the maxi dress – for instance, it’s array of styles and how to wear each of them. But it’s often the way of the fashion world to re-introduce items in fresh form, from one season to the next. For instance, if a particular season yields military jackets, the next might see military-inspired trousers or boots take centre stage. So it’s no wonder that just as the maxi dress was beginning to settle in, maxi skirts emerged as the newest trend.
Like the maxi dress, the maxi skirt is characterised by length – usually falling anywhere from the ankle to the floor. However, aside from this element, the maxi skirt – again, just like the maxi dress – comes in very diverse styles. From flowing to fitted, embellished or printed, various looks can be achieved with the maxi skirt.
Another great feature of the maxi skirt is that it’s incredibly versatile – no matter what style of skirt you opt for. Whether you’re dressing down for a casual day, or dressing up for a night out, just one maxi skirt can serve as a fashionable backdrop for a number of different looks. For example, while the maxi skirt varies in fit towards the bottom, it usually hugs the hip at the top. But this doesn’t mean you always have to don the hip-hugging style. Try pairing your maxi skirt with a baggy top, and add a belt to accentuate your waist (instead of your hips). You’ll instantly get a new look, not to mention hide any unwanted bulges.
Another way to wear your maxi skirt is to layer with it. Of course, a maxi skirt can be dramatic on its own, due to its length and amount of featured fabric. But adding an extra layer – for instance, with a long trench coat – will increase the skirt’s eye-catching factor. This is a great look for nights out on the town, or for special events when you want to impress.
Last but not least, those who are still enamoured with the maxi dress – but have their eye on the maxi skirt – can have the best of both worlds. Wear your maxi skirt as a skirt one day, and as a dress the next. Simply pull the maxi skirt up over your bust, secure it with a pin if necessary, and add all the extras – such as a belt, jacket or jewellery. This is also a great option for shorter fashionistas, as pulling the skirt up into a dress will instantly shorten it. With so many stylistic possibilities like these, it’s no wonder women everywhere are in love with the maxi skirt.
